Dying To Do Letterman Movie Review!
Our Midwest correspondent Lisa Bricker touches on a film that’s close to her heart.
What are you dying to do at this very moment? Most of us don’t think about it until life throws us a curve ball. Steve Mazan wasn’t giving it much thought. The fun, loving comedian from Chicago was doing what he loved to do best — making people laugh — until one day in 2005 a severe pain landed him in the hospital. Steve was diagnosed with inoperable tumors in his liver. It was cancer.
With the grim possibility of only having five years or less to live, Steve decided it was time to pursue his dream of performing on The Late Show with David Letterman. In the award-winning documentary Dying to do Letterman, Steve takes us on an enlightening journey showing us how to live life to the fullest.
Steve uses gentle humor to share his intimate exploration of the precious moments we often miss in life. Funny yet gripping, the movie begins with Steve’s “Top 10 Benefits of Catching Cancer” and follows him to his lowest points during draining cancer treatments. Mazan’s message, “live his dream or die trying.”
With Steve’s wife Denise by his side and surrounded by close friends, husband-and-wife producing team Joke Fincioen and Biagio document the determined comedian on his pilgrimage to beat the odds.
The movie gives the audience a chance to see some of Hollywood’s finest funnymen, including Ray Romano, Kevin Nealon and Steve’s best friend, Gary Cannon.
Funny, melancholy, enriching, engaging, loving are only some of the words to describe this life changing film. So don’t wait, live your dream today. With that being said, “What are you dying to do?”
See Dying to Do Letterman in Chicago Friday June 17th at 8 p.m. at the Gene Siskel Theatre.
