THE 2017 UPFRONTS: WHAT WE’LL BE WATCHING THIS SEASON ON The CW!By Delaina Dixon | May 19, 2017 | Entertainment
The CW is truly committed to diversity this upcoming season. So much so, they had one of our fave CW stars, Gina Rodriguez, come out and talk about it.
The Jane The Virgin star emphasized how art breaks down barriers. “We can learn a lot about what we are not through art,” she declared, adding that art can embrace inclusion and equality. The CW’s mission? To be innovative, expansive and revolutionary. “It wants to help the world heal, and reflect what America truly looks like.”
That’s a tall order, but The CW is practicing what it preaches. That includes embracing all its superheroes with another crossover takeover November 2017 and adding Valor, a show about people in the armed forces. The CW, which has renewed Supernatural for a 13th season!, is also doing an animated episode with the Winchester boys and Scooby Doo.
Now, onto the shows we’ll be watching this upcoming season.
What’s It About? Yes, THAT Dynasty is back. Reimagined for 2017, welcome to the 1 percent of the one percent.
Our Divalicious Take. During our trailer sneak peek, we saw traces of an epic catfight that made Dynasty a TV legend. This is a show about greed and excess, which means guilty pleasure viewing for all. All we ask? Bring on a Dominique Deveraux-like villain so deliciously played by Diahann Carroll. Heck, just bring back Ms. Carroll herself!
Black Lightning (midseason)
What’s It About? Jefferson Pierce hung up his hat as the superhero that protects his community, but crime is once again running rampant. He’s slipping back into the costume – but this time he won’t have to do it alone since his offspring are showing signs of supernatural greatness.
Our Divalicious Take. Black Lightning was one of the first African-American characters in the comics world, so it’s no-brainerer that The CW is bringing him into their superhero stable. This show is unapologetically black, headlined by an entire cast of color, which includes Cress Williams, China Anne McClain and Nafessa Williams.
L;fe Sentence (midseason)
What’s It About? A young woman who’s battled cancer for the past eight years finds out she’s cured… And then discovers all the sacrifices her family and friends have made for her while she was battling her disease.
Our Divalicious Take. It’s an intriguing concept, how does one deal with life after she learns she’ll live? Again, The CW is committed to diversifying its cast; Elliot Knight plays star Lucy Hale’s devoted husband, along with appearances by Carlos PenaVega, Annie Jacob, Matt Mercurio and Nadej k Bailey.
