WATCH. Notes From the Field premieres on HBO this weekend, and we know what you’re thinking: “Look it’s Rainbow’s mother – Rainbow from Black-ish.” In the scenes that followed the introduction, we knew that this event is no comedy. Veteran actress, Tony and Pulitzer Prize nominee Anna Deavere Smith brings her acclaimed one-woman show to the screen, dramatizing accounts of students, parents, teachers and administrators that are “caught in America’s school-to-prison pipeline, which pushes underprivileged, minority youth out of the classroom and into incarceration.” Drawn from interviews Anna conducted with more than 200 people living and working within America’s most challenged system, Notes From the Field brings to life people who are pushed into incarceration and those struggling to help them find another way, along with our nation’s leading voices, like U.S. Representative John Lewis and author James Baldwin, whose gems of wisdom still ring true today. Anne is literally brilliant as she recounts the words of these people verbatim, changing her look, tone and mannerisms to mirror her real-life characters. Watching her embody all these souls makes your own soul long for criminal justice reform, educational advancements and just a kinder nation in which we live in. Juxtapositioned against last week’s release of Black Panther, this masterful work is sobering and reflective and leads to a strong call to action by everyone who is willing to hear – and the whole nation should. Notes From the Field premieres Saturday, Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. on HBO and HBO Go.
SEE. The new film Game Night revolves around married duo Max and Annie, who love their game nights. When Max’s seemingly successful brother comes to town and throws his own game night, he says he’s going to take it up a notch, and boy does he ever. Within minutes, someone’s been taken, and the abduction is no game – or is it? There are so many twists and turns in Game Night, it’s hard to keep up with what’s real or what’s for pretend – but that just adds to the fun. This may be a thriller – but it’s a laugh out loud one, as our players bumble through clues or take pratfalls. I actually thought the first half of the film was the funniest as the cast is unraveling what’s really going versus the film’s middle, which lags a bit – but the whole journey is worth the payoff in the end. And it’s fun to see New Girl‘s Lamorne Morris do what he does best – play a lovable geek – on the big screen. Game Night opens today.
LIGHT. According to Soraa’s research, lighting is everything and it even has health benefits! The proper lighting affects not just your sleep patterns but also your breathing with the help of Nobel Prize-winning inventor of the blue light LED. LED has been strategically lighting the world’s top galleries, museums, restaurants and retail stores for more than a decade. Now the best-in-class lighting is available to consumers for residential uses. I don’t know if it’s in my mind but since I installed our newest bulbs I have been feeling much more relaxed!
