SEE. We don’t often see the American Civil War from the viewpoint of the poor white soldier who fought for the Confederacy. Free State Of Jones, which is based on a true story, gives a brief look into it through the eyes of Newton Knight, a farmer who abandoned his military expectations and started a revolution. This riveting true-life tale is delivered in all its glorious grit, dirt and compassion. With other poor famers and escaped slaves by his side, Newt succeeded parts of Jones County, Miss., from the South, declaring it the Free State of Jones. This poignant period piece – featuring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mahershala Ali, and directed by Gary Ross – gives insight into the background of political parties, the racial divide and the violence suffered by the first Black voting rights organizers. Our freedom to vote and pursue the American Dream was paid by thousands of African-American lives. There was a little time for romance between the fight for freedom – one that affected the Knight family in a sensational legal case almost 100 years later. This is a must-see film for anyone interested in American History. Matthew McConaughey, who plays the larger-than-life rebel, can expect honors again during award season. Free State of Jones, now playing nationwide. See a clip from the movie below.

Independence Day 2

SEE TOO. It’s been a while since America has kicked some alien butt – so why not now? Independence Day: Resurgence has our great nation fighting the most intense alien invasion yet – with alien technology we mastered from the first Independence Day 20 years ago. Jessie T. Usher plays Dylan Hiller, the son of Steven Hiller, played by Will Smith in the original 1996 film. And TV DivaGal’s Mom’s fave #WBWD Jeff Goldblum is back for round two! This is more talk, all action, which is exactly what we’d expect from an Independence Day sequel. Expect a fun, CG-filled ride. Independence Day: Resurgence, now playing nationwide.
