GAL APPROVED Weekend: Must-See Movie 12 Years A Slave; Sharknado & Shakira!By DIVAGALS | October 18, 2013 | Entertainment, Gal Approved
SEE. It’s not easy for TV DivaGal to tell you to see 12 Years A Slave, a brutal and uncompromising account of a free black man who is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Based on the memoirs of Solomon Northup, published in 1853, Mr. Northup, a musician, spent 12 years in captivity in the south even though he was a free man. This retelling of the horrid true tale is disturbing and uncomfortable to watch. From the “selling of Negroes” without a flinch on the part of slave owners and lashings and lynchings that happen on a daily basis, to the incessant sexual victimization of black women throughout the film, you will never really have a moment to exhale while watching. But under Steve McQueen‘s deft hand, it is shot in a way that’s hauntingly beautiful. This film will leave you questioning the souls of men and women – and wondering if we can ever truly find salvation and redemption for our American brothers and sisters from centuries past. I can only hope that people will be humbled once they see this film, and demand that even in 2013, we keep the constant struggle for understanding, acceptance and humanity alive.

SUPPORT. It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month! On Oct. 24, our own Health Diva Dr. Janna Andrews (pictured center) will host the second annual “Kicked It In Heels” fundraiser right here in NYC! The nonprofit organization is focused on the beauty of breast cancer survivorship in young women and women of color, and is aimed at correcting the health care disparities in breast cancer by focusing on young women and women of color as they aim to transition back into their day-to-day lives. This year’s lineup includes Zoraida Sambolin, CNN host of Early Start, for her efforts to raise awareness surrounding breast cancer. DJ Selwyn Hinds will be spinning, drinks and snacks are provided by Myx Fusions and Magnolia Bakery, and a silent auction will help raise money with some amazing items like Super Bowl packages and jewelry provided by designer to the stars Shauna Neely!
