Movies You Have To See This Holiday Weekend. Plus: One Last Great Gift!By The DivaGals | December 23, 2016 | Gal Approved
WATCH. Oscar winner Denzel Washington and Emmy winner Viola Davis recreate their Tony-nominated roles in August Wilson‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Fences, this time on the big screen. Denzel is Troy Maxson, a 1950s sanitation worker who dreamed becoming a professional baseball player but wasn’t young enough once the league was integrated. His loss affects all of his family, including his equally-athletic son. Could this production bring these exceptional thespians their next round of awards at next month’s Golden Globes? We think so! Fences opens on Christmas Day.
WATCH TWO. The new flick Why Him? is centered around the Christmas holiday, the time when you bring around a significant committed other to meet the parents. It’s got all the awkwardness of a classic Meet The Parents, but this time it’s a very un-PC James Franco (being everything you’d expect James Franco to be) meeting the parents of the woman he loves. Loving and overprotective dad Ned (Bryan Cranston) travels to California to visit his daughter Stephanie (Zoey Deutch) at Stanford University. While there, he meets boyfriend Laird (Franco). Laird is a billionaire, but that doesn’t guarantee acceptance by hard-as-nails Ned who disapproves of Laird’s no filter attitude and curse-filled language. It’s funny, it’s sexy, it’s gross … and you’ll enjoy it!
GIVE. One final gift suggestion for the fashion elite in your life featuring the work of creative director at large Grace Coddington: Grace: The American Vogue Years (Phaidon). The 400-page doorstopper contains nearly 300 images and collects work in the magazine from 2002 until present. Phaidon also reprinted an earlier book that surveyed her entire career until 2002, Grace: Thirty Years of Fashion at Vogue. What do we love about Grace? For one she has a mane of hair that reminds us of our afro with a touch of color. And well … she is Grace!
