DivaGal contributor Brittany McCarthy is back in action, live at the movie screening of I AM ALI, directed by Clare Lewins.
“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” The famous words of Muhammad Ali, one of the world’s greatest boxers, is captured in a two-hour long documentary of his life. The film takes you on an intimate look inside Ali’s life that has never been seen before.
I AM ALI traces the path of a great man through exclusive interviews with his inner circle of friends and family, including other legends of the boxing community like George Foreman, Mike Tyson and Gene Kilroy.
Director Lweins includes actual telephone and tape recordings of Ali communicating to his family and friends, which provide the narrative portion of the film. I AM ALI provides personal accounts not just of Ali as a fighter, but as a father, husband, brother and friend. Each contributor to the film had their own unique thoughts and stories about the legend, but they all agree that he is “The Greatest,” conjuring up another one of his famous lines, “I am the greatest. I said that before I even knew I was.”
In the words of art director George Lois, who shot the famous and controversial cover of Ali in 1968 when he was being charged with draft evasion (he had converted to Islam and refused to fight due to religious beliefs): “The boxer who has stunned the world with his dazzling fists and dancing footwork, audacious rhymes and his passion for life, had by now become popular among white and a god-like figure to blacks. Ali helped change the despair of bad, bad time in America.”
See I AM ALI in theaters and On Demand on Oct. 10.
