The 2016 Upfronts: What We’ll Be Watching This Season on ABC!

StillStarCrossed

Under the leadership of Channing Dungey, the first black president of a major network (ULTIMATE DIVAGAL!), ABC’s mission statement is “Believe in Better.”

Channing, who was resplendent in a sharp white jacket, has set out to bring more great stories that win the hearts and minds everywhere, and a roster filled with diversity. That includes a musical version of Dirty Dancing, which features Nicole Scherzinger and Billy Dee Williams.

Here are the shows we can’t wait to see on ABC this upcoming season.

Kiefer-Sutherland-002

Designated Survivor (Wednesdays)
What’s It About? Did you know that one member of the cabinet takes an oath to become president if everyone else in line for the position is wiped out? Well, this is the story of that one person who rises to the highest office in the nation after Capitol Hill is bombed.
Our Divalicious Take. Keifer Sutherland passed on his 24 franchise fame to a rising African-American star, so we give him our #WBWD honor just for that. The diverse cast is rounded out with Maggie Q and Kal Penn. Check out the trailer here.

Speechless ABC

Speechless (Wednesdays)
What’s It About? ABC’s new family comedy features a dedicated mother (Minne Driver), who will stop at nothing to create the perfect life for her physically challenged son, even at the expense of her other two kids. Since he doesn’t speak, he needs a voice, and finds ust the right one in their newest town.
Our Divalicious Take. That voice is played by Cedric Yarbrough, who charmed us and Donna on Crazy Ex Girlfriend. Sad to know he’s left Covina; glad to know he’s found a voice on ABC. Check out the trailer here.

Notorious ABC

Notorious (Thursdays)
What’s It About? It’s the apex of high powered lawyering from well-rounded actor Daniel Sunjata, and his tumultuous friendship with the cable news producer who decides when this attorney makes headlines.
Our Divalicious Take. ABC is a master at turning the workplace into a hotbed of sex, action and drama. Why not do it in front of a viewing audience of millions? Plus, it’s a great chance to see what happens behind the scenes in a TV news room. Check out the trailer here.

Still Star Crossed (midseason)
What’s It About? So what happened AFTER Romeo and Juliet took their own lives for love? The Capulets and Montagues try to find peace by marrying off the two people who fought the hardest against the young lovers’ union.
Our Divalicious Take. This is coming right out of Shondaland, so you know there’s an interracial love story somewhere. Romeo is black and Juliet is white, so the couple forced to marry is the flipped version of the young lovers. Which means at some point, their hatred will turn to unbridled passion, and that love scene will be explosive.

TimeafterTime ABC

Time After Time(midseason)
What’s It About? H.G. Wells travels in a time machine to stop Jack the Ripper, who’s fascinated by how evil works in 2016.
Our Divalicious Take. We almost wrote this one off, then we learned that H.G. Wells has a great granddaughter who’s black. We need to know how that works! Check out the trailer here.

When We Rise (special event)
What’s It About? This is dramatic telling of the gay right’s movement, from Stonewall to marriage equality. Whoopi Goldberg and Michael Kenneth Williams star.
Our Divalicious Take. The DivaGals believe that every person, no matter their race, gender or orientation, should be treated with dignity and respect. The struggle is real. Check out the trailer here.
