TV PREMIERE WEEK! This Is Us’ Susan Kelechi Watson On Why Black Love Is So Important on TVBy Delaina Dixon | September 26, 2017 | Entertainment
OK Divas, we know you’ve stocked up on your tissues for tonight’s season premiere of This Is Us.
If you’re like us, you’ve loved watching the wonderful connection of Randall Pearson and his devoted wife Beth, played by Susan Kelechi Watson. At NBC Press Tour SUmmer ’17, she explained to us why it’s so important to see black love work on screen.
“It’s nice to see people who love each other. It’s nice to see people who actually chose their choice over and over again – and it’s nice when those people are black people because we don’t get to see that very often,” she shared. Susan added that the response “has told me how starved we were for it.”
Much like her onscreen husband, Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown feels a sense of responsibility for the positive portrayal, Susan wants this imagery to have a lasting impact. “I hope it’s a trickle-down effect and catches fire … we can watch and appreciate their love regardless of what color they are. It’s people standing in their truth.” We couldn’t agree more.
This Is Us, season two, begins Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. on NBC.
