Shots Fired is the new explosive 10-part movie from the talented married creative team Reggie and Gina Bythewood. Exploring race, class and the code of blue, it’s sure to get your family talking about all these issues.
Taking place in North Carolina (what is it about that state?), a young white man is shot dead by a black officer while in a predominately black neighborhood. Many witnessed, but no one is talking. That’s because another shooting has recently taken place, and the police force – which is primary white – has been less than helpful in that case.
A special prosecutor (Stephan James) is assigned to this indelicate situation. He states that doesn’t see color, only justice. But it be becomes quickly evident that won’t be easy. Sanaa Lathan plays Ashe Akino, the case’s leads detective. She’s a dark, moody, troubled and sexy detective who’s personal life is as chaotic as the case she is investing. Ashe is untamed and a rule breaker, but you know her unorthodox tactics will most likely be needed to crack this case.
In this dramatization of police shootings of unarmed youth, which has become much too common in our country, it’s a somber ride with shots of humor and excellent performances. There are a lot of twists and turns and intrigue in this limited series, along with “did they just say that” dialogue and a notable cast. Shots Fired doesn’t miss its target.
Shots fired premieres Wednesday. March 22 at 8 pm on fox. Stay for the midseason premiere of Empire at 9 p.m on FOX.
