WHAT WE’RE WATCHING TONIGHT Donald Glover Find His Voice on F/X’s Atlanta!By Delaina Dixon | September 6, 2016 | Entertainment
Comedian, musician and Community alum Donald Glover is bringing his own voice to F/X with the premiere of Atlanta. And yes, it’s just as salty as you imagined.
Donald plays Earn Marks, a smart but unmotivated single father who is still searching for his place in the world. Enter his cousin Alfred, a rising rapper on the Atlanta scene known as Paper Boi. Earn finally sees the light — if he can manage his cousin’s career, they can both rise above Atlanta.
“It’s a good place to examine America; it’s 60 percent black, there’s one man for every four women, and it has second largest gay population in the nation,” says Donald, who conceived the series.
In this world, Earn and Paper Boi deal with the harsh realities of inner city living — that means a gun shot here or there, and some illegal business deals. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have a middle class life. You learn that Earn dropped out of an Ivy League school and Paper Boi lives in a town house.
And they associate with white people. So much that one of Earn’s buddies feels comfortable enough to use the n-word. Donald says he wanted to “explore the type of black person who would allow the n-word to be said around them by their white friends.”
Of course, the series is shot on location in A-Town. Donald says he wanted the series to feel “less like TV and more like an event.” Shooting there makes it feel as real as possible.
Atlanta, series premiere, airs Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 10 p.m. on F/X.
