Rise SERIES PREMIERE (10 p.m. NBC) The network’s newest tug at your heartstrings show premieres tonight. Rise follows a group of students who rise past the stereotypes thrust on them to star in their high school’s controversial musical production, under the sage tutelage of their teacher and music director Lou Mazzuchelli (played by #WBWD Josh Radnor – read our exclusive interview with the star!)
Moana fans will definitely recognize the voice of Auliʻi Cravalho, who stars as Lillette Suarez, the working class gal with a heart (and voice!) of gold. At NBC’s Press Day event, Auli’i shared with us that she was always a good student and is excited to share how tough school life can be for young people nowadays.
The series explores must-be-discussed themes such as bullying, homosexuality, peer pressure and transgenderism. Rise also promotes an unabashedly diverse cast which includes Damon J. Gillespie, Tiffany Mann, Rachel Hilson, Casey Johnson and non-gender specific star Ellie Desautels, just to name a few.
Rising off the backs of high school shows about music (Fame, Glee), we think Rise will also graduate with honors.
