The energy in BAM was absolutely palpable on Monday evening as we settled in to catch our first glimpse of the teaser. To say we were blown away is an understatement, but the real highlight was the electrifying cast talkback hosted by the incomparable Lena Waithe. She moderated a captivating Q&A with visionaries behind and in front of the camera, including brilliant director/co-screenwriter Gina Prince-Bythewood and a stellar cast featuring Thuso Mbedu, Tosin Cole, Lashana Lynch, Zackary Momoh, and the iconic Regina King. Hearing them speak about bringing Tomi Adeyemi’s rich universe to life gave us chills!
After the panel, the celebration moved into a cocktail reception wrapped in truly sumptuous decor. Guests sipped on premium cocktails and indulged in delectable West African bites that were as flavorful as they were beautiful. The ambiance was dialed all the way up, surrounded by mannequins showcasing the film’s stunning, intricate wardrobes crafted by costume designer Charlese Antoinette Jones, alongside incredible artistic touches by cultural consultant Laolu Senbanjo and production designer Hannah Beachler.
The star-studded room was buzzing with industry powerhouses, including producers Matt Jackson, Karen Rosenfelt, and Wyck Godfrey, as well as executive producer Reggie Rock Bythewood, makeup designer Matiki Anoff, and dialect coach Yetunde Felix-Ukwu. We also spotted fabulous special guests mingling throughout the night, including Vanessa Estelle Williams, Adrienne Warren, Cari Champion, and Kara Young.
