Caroline Cao’s Divalicious dispatches from Anime NYC continue!
I wish I had grown up with Revolutionary Girl Utena, a seminal queer anime. Of course, Utena was evoked at the “Rise of Queer Manga” Anime NYC panel, moderated by Erica Friedman, with panelists TJ Ferentini, Jacqueline Fung and Nicole Roderick recommending a plethora of LGBTQ+ manga.

My first exposure to queer characters, perhaps, was in my casual childhood watching of Sailor Moon. Of course, the English dub tried to scrub out Uranus and Neptune’s infamous lesbian relationship and watered it down to “cousins.” So it means a lot that there’s a growth in LGBTQ+ in manga and anime culture.
Here are the programs Mangas discussed:
- Boys Run the Riot
- Sasaki and Miyano
- Whisper Me a Love Song
- A Home Far Away
- Until I Meet My Husband
- Twilight Out of Focus
- Delinquent Daddy and Tender Teacher
- She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat
- Otherside Picnic
- Even Though We’re Adults
- I’m in Love With The Villainess
- The Moon on a Rainy Night
Happy reading and watching!
