Hey DivaGals! Summer is almost here. The weather has warmed up. It’s the perfect time to challenge myself to get my body in its best shape yet. That’s why I’m taking a 30-Day Challenge!
THE GOAL. Being an editor has me sitting in front of the computer for long hours, which has definitely taken its toll on my arms, abs and legs. My goal is to slim down and sculpt up by losing 5 percent of my body weight, which is about 6 lbs.
THE WORKOUT. Now that the weather is nice, it’s easy to take my workouts outside. I’ll be revving up my cardio and sculpting intensely with top trainers at Mercedes Club NY, in group athletic training classes (it’s more fun with others!), as well as a couple of personal training sessions. See my full workout program below:
4X-5X/weekly CARDIO, 20-40 minutes (running, spinning, elliptical)
1X/weekly CARDIO, 60 minutes
2X/weekly ATHLETIC CONDITIONING
2X/weekly, STRENGTH TRAINING broken down as:
back, biceps, hamstrings, shoulders, abs
chest, triceps, quads, calves, abs
3X/weekly 10-minute YOGA/PILATES. There are a ton of choices on YouTube that can be done anywhere at any time. It’s so important to stretch and lengthen your muscles. Take a class or two first to learn proper alignment.
THE DIET. Ask any fitness trainer and he or she will tell you ΓÇô abs are made in the kitchen, true that! I’m following a diet modified from two of my fave nutrition books, Eat To Lose, Eat To Win, which cuts down on starchy carbs and revs up on vegetables and fruits, and The Abs Diet For Women, which promotes lean proteins and shakes. I’m aiming for 1300-1500 calories daily, which I’ll track on MyFitnessPal.com.
Here are few other diet rules I’ll keep in mind.
Eat fruits early in the day. Fruits contain higher levels of sugar than most natural foods, so eating them earlier in the day, when your body is still in motion.
Pace your eating with small meals. I’ll aim for 4-5 small meals daily, and make every effort not to eat within an hour of bedtime.
Now here’s where it gets hard. I may spend my day at my desk, but I spend my evening on the nightlife circuit. That means plenty of alcohol, and nothing derails a diet faster. I know it’s impossible to say I’ll cut drinking entirely, but I do plan to curb my libations to 3-4 per week. And I’m sticking pretty much to a glass of red wine or the occasional Prosecco.
THE EXTRAS. I’m planning to do some heavy lifting while I train which, means sore muscles. Luckily, in New York City, there’s a massage spa practically on every block. So I’m taking advantage of 20 minute $20 dollar specials and getting a rubdown once a week. Massage Envy, a membership massage service, has locations across the nation.
