CBS Press Tour Winter ’17! Training Day’s Justin Cornwell Has A Father Figure On the Series (Guess Who?)By Delaina Dixon | January 10, 2017 | Entertainment
Hey Divas! CBS’ reboot of Training Day has Bill Paxton being the “bad influence” on his young trainee, played by Justin Cornwell. That looks┬áa little different from the 2001 movie where Denzel Washington played the crooked veteran┬ácop and won an Oscar for his portrayal.
Training Day executive producer Antoine Fuqua, who helmed the movie 16 years ago, explained that they weren’t thinking about color┬áwhen they pulled together the TV cast. “It wasn’t a racial conversation,” he shared. “It was like, ‘Who is the best actors for it?’ And when we found out Bill had interest, it was like, ‘That’s a good idea.'”
And a smart one too. Bill is giving a lot of love to his “protege.” During press panel, he talked about how they have a father/son/buddy relationship on screen, one that Justin confided to us extends off-screen as well. That’s probably why Frank’s “not setting his partner up to be killed,” as Paxton pointed out.
Yes, this bad cop is actually softer than the one Denzel portrayed in the movie. “Alonzo’s character had already crossed way over. He’s deep, deep┬áΓÇæΓÇæ he’s gone. He was dead when the movie started,” EP Fuqua explained. “Bill’s character is more like the old western hero than Alonzo’s character. We try to stay away from being as dark.”
Training Day premieres Thursday, Feb. 2 at 10 p.m. on CBS.
