The 89th Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and unlike last year’s show, we’ll be seeing more color than just the host.
For the first time in history, three women of color received nods in the “Supporting Actress” category: Oscar winner Octavia Spencer for Hidden Fences, previous Oscar nominee Viola Davis for Fences, and Naomie Harris for Moonlight.
Oscar winner Denzel Washington is in the “Lead Actor” category for his searing work in Fences. And newcomer Ruth Negga snagged a “Lead Actress” nod for her work in Loving.
In the best “Supporting Actor” category, ┬áDev Patel┬áand Mahershala Ali both received recognition, for Lion and Moonlight, respectively.
Hidden Figures and Moonlight, which both tackle African-American issues, are up for best picture. Barry Jenkins is up for best director for Moonlight, which received nine nominations in total.
Congrats – this show is gonna be jumpin’ jumpin’!
