The annual Tony Award nominees were announced Monday, and several shows featuring diverse casts and creatives got the nod. Paradise Square, showcasing life for Blacks and Irish living in an impoverished part of New York City in the 1800s, was nominated for “Best Musical,” along with MJ – the Michael Jackson story; Billy Crystal‘s Mr. Saturday Night; A Strange Loop, an exploration of Black queerness; and Six: The Musical, featuring a diverse cast as King Henry VIII‘s six wives. A new rendering of Ntozake Shange‘s for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf garnered seven nominations, including “Best Revival of a Play.” The 75th annual ceremony is set for June 12 at Radio City Music Hall.
K-pop artist AleXa, who represented her home state of Oklahoma, was crowned the winner of NBC’s American Song Contest on Monday night! Congrats to the Sooner State!
The New York African Film Festival returns to NYC at Lincoln Center, with opening night on May 12 under the banner Visions of Freedom. The festival runs there through May 17, then heads to the Maysles Documentary Center in Harlem from May 19 to 22. It concludes, as always, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music during Dance Africa (under the name Film Africa) from May 27 to June 2. Get more information here.
