GAL APPROVED! Getting Ready For The 29th Fantasia International Film Festival: Our Must-See Films
By Caroline Cao | July 13, 2025 | Celebrity & Culture
Our divalicious Movie Diva, Caroline Cao, will be covering the virtual portion of the Fantasia Film Festival. These are some of the films she is riding the hype train for.
Fixed
Do you want to watch a movie about a horny bulldog? If the legendary Genndy Tartakovsky directs it, the answer is yes. If you’re waiting for season 3 of Primal, Fixed is the raunchy adult animated comedy you could expect out of him. Bull (Adam Devine) is slobbering over the neighboring hound, Honey (Kathryn Hahn). But oh no! He has a certain vet appointment that would cut away his carnal desires.
La mort n’existe pas
Directed by Félix Dufour-Laperrière, this film deals with activists acting against an affluent family. But it goes wrong. That sounds like the classic kind of adult animated film I want to see.
I Am Frankelda (Soy Frankelda)
Directed by Roy Ambriz and Arturo Ambriz, I Am Frankelda has garnered hype around the animation community as it is the first feature stop-motion film, with the thumbs up from Guillermo del Toro. So far, the style indicates an astounding, florid-Gothic aesthetic.
Juliet & the King (Juliet va Shah)
Ashkan Rahgozar’s Juliet & the King has intrigue you don’t find in an animated feature often. It’s about an actress, Julie, and her friend, a Persian playwright, trying to reach success. So when the Shah of Iran arrives in France, the opportunity has arrived for Julie to show her chops in Romeo & Juliet.
Angel’s Egg
This screening of a 1980s classic anime feature ought to enthrall and confound. When I watched the film years ago with a NYC Japan Society crowd, I certainly had my own interpretation, and it’s stimulating to read other interpretations. You don’t necessarily have to ascribe to it; you can just be in for the ride.
The Fantasia International Film Festival runs July 16 through August 3. Get more information about the festival here.
