SEE. In Unexpected, newcomer Gail Bean plays a high school teen in Chicago who learns she’s having a baby around the same time as her teacher. But what’s really unexpected about this story is that it’s steeped in a real-life occurrence! “It’s based on [co-writer/director] Kris Swanberg‘s real-life experience. She taught on Chicago’s South Side, and one of her students and her got pregnant around the same time. It’s based on their story and they are still friends.” To prep for the role, Gail also drew on her own real-life experiences. “My best friend got pregnant our senior year of high school and I was by her side through it all,” she shares. “I spoke with the girl who is the real-life Jasmine and we hung out. I got to meet her son ΓÇô he’s four now ΓÇô and I drew from my own relationships that I had with teachers in the past.” There aren’t any shocking twists and turns in this┬á true-life tale. But it’s interesting slice-of-life feature to see how these two women both process and move forward from one life-altering revelation. Unexpected is currently playing in theaters.
