WATCH. The Birth of A Nation is one of the most uncomfortable films I have ever seen as it presents American history in all its darkness and brutality. It is at once searing and delicate.┬áBased on a real-life American hero,┬áNat Turner is a slave/Baptist preacher who lives on a Virginia plantation owned by Samuel Turner. To quell rumors of unrest and insurrection in the air, a cleric convinces Samuel that Nate should sermonize to other slaves, using the bible to suppress an uprising. As Nate witnesses the brutality inflicted on┬áfellow people, he realizes that he can no longer just stand by and preach. On Aug. 21, 1831, Turner’s quest for justice and freedom —- much like his biblical forefather Moses — Nat leads to a violent and historic rebellion in Southampton County. There are some beautiful moments in the film, including Nat’s heroic gestures to save the woman that would one day become his wife. Nate and the cast’s performances are subtle and nuanced, and elevates the piece into something that will leave audiences haunted. This film is a must-see for history buffs and for anyone who may be confused about the nature of how slavery built America and where the red of the Red, White and Blue came from. The Birth Of A Nation, currently playing in theaters.

WATCH TOO. In present-day America, black women are still having to justify themselves: their hair, their career, their personal lives. Issa Rae, the creator of the wildly popular YouTube hit Awkward Black Girl, takes a look at all we deal with ΓÇô with some biting humor — in her new HBO comedy series Insecure. She plays, well, Issa, whoΓÇÖs living in Los Angeles and on her 29th birthday takes stock of her life, and wonders if she should be doing it differently, like leave the nonprofit going nowhere job and dump the cute boyfriend who doesnΓÇÖt have much ambition. Her best friend is a powerful executive, but like many girls in their twenties, wants to find the right guy and settle down. Of course they hit up a club in incredible outfits to ponder whatΓÇÖs next! Insecure is like Girls for a multicultural audience, with a touch of Sex and the City glam thrown in. if you love┬áGirlfriends, Living Single and The Mindy Project, this is the show for you! Insecure premieres Sunday, Oct. 9 at 10:30 p.m. Watch Divorce, Sarah Jessica ParkerΓÇÖs new comedy series, right before at 10 p.m.

STRUT. If our world does find itself in aapoplectic aftermath, weΓÇÖve found the designer to dress us! Zam Barrett partnered with Ukrainian avant-garde accessories designer Konstantin Kofta to present ΓÇ£Silent Violent,ΓÇ¥ its first NYFW runway show in 10 years. The collab takes ready-to-wear to a new level with clothing armored to protect and prey. And some of it is actually wearable. We loved ZamΓÇÖs sharp red moto jacket and the deconstructed white oxford pictured above (weΓÇÖd wear the whole outfit in tact). The collection showcased pieces for both sexes so there is no excuse for any man, woman or child to look shabby just because the world almost came to its demise.
