WATCH. Who thought that the story of a baby elephant with oversized ears could take you on a roller coaster? That’s exactly what Disney’s live-action version of Dumbo does. Born in a broken down circus, Dumbo is separated from his mother after she rightfully destroys everything in her path to protect him. Grownups think Dumbo is something that should be hidden until young children (who can see the beauty in anything) befriend Dumbo and learn he can fly. That catches the eye of Vandermere (Michael Keaton) who wants Dumbo to be his star attraction and makes an offer that should have been refused. This leads to a series of events that showcases love, friendship and the right to be free. Tim Burton has thoughtfully explored how we treat others who look different than us, the bond between mother and child and what happens when they are ripped apart. There are moments that make us sad, moments that make us laugh and moments that made a jaded NYC audience cheer. That’s powerful! It also’s child-friendly. Two 3 year olds came out of our screening proudly holding up their Dumbo posters declaring, “He can fly!” Maybe it will leave your soaring too. Disney’s Dumbo, now playing nationally.
