Remembering Our Past

St. Paul Community Baptist Church (SPCBC) in Brooklyn, N.Y. hosted The MAAFA, an annual experience that honors the suffering endured by African slaves brought to America through the Middle Passage. Over the course of the 8-day MAAFA Commemoration, St. Paul presented a
new, one-of-a-kind presentation, Let My People Live, inspired by The MAAFA Suite. In addition to this presentation, St. Paul offered classes and discussions presented by renowned speakers on historical and current issues in the black community and interactive activities such as an on-site walking tour of the MAAFA museum which contains artwork and historical artifacts (circa the 1700s to 1800s), spiritual sessions in the outdoor healing hut, and a closing sunrise seaside send off.

“For nearly three decades St. Paul has been a national leader in continuing the conversation
of healing through sacred memory. We create a needed space to reflect on the historical and
continued disregard for Black life in America,” said Dr. David Brawley, lead pastor of SPCBC.
“This commemoration is not only a painful glimpse backward but a celebration of the
collective resilience of African Americans.”
