GAL APPROVED! Movies To Laugh & Cry; Hot Travel Bags; Spicy Summer Cocktails & Underwear For Outside!By DIVAGALS | July 12, 2013 | Gal Approved
SEE. Pacific Rim is a science fiction film directed by Guillermo del Toro, written by del Toro and Travis Beacham. The film is set in the near future where soldiers pilot giant mechanical robots called Jaegers to battle against invading “Kaiju,” Godzilla-like creatures who have risen from a portal below the Pacific. If you listen carefully you’ll pick up on the subtle ecological warnings of the dangers of global warming that leads to the appearance of the Kaiju. Along with hot hunks like Son of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam and sexy Idris Elba, there’s a very PG flirtation between fellow soldiers Raleigh (Hunnam) and Mako Rinko Kikuchi. While added comic relief is provided by geeky scientist Charlie Day and quirky resident apocalyptic business opportunist Ron Perlman. We Gal Approve Pacific Rim, especially in 3D.
SIP. There’s nothing like a cool cocktail to beat the heat. The DivaGals hit Boulton & Watt in Manhattan’s Lower East side to try some of the restaurant’s newest summer cocktails. We loved the Mexican Revolver; it was refreshingly cool with its unexpected blend of tequila and Prosecco. If you crave grapefruit, try the Kamanawanalaya with two type of rum, compari, passionfruit, pineapple and lime. Boulton & Watt pickles just about everything; we couldn’t get enough of their pickled pineapple, brussels sprouts and cucumbers. Try them along with Boulton & Watt’s wild mushrooms with tamari and thyme and a basket of seasoned fries, grab a bench underneath the oversized windows, and enjoy the view of handsome waiters and Boulton & Watt’s charming owner/mixologist Jaime Felber (pictured above). See more pictures of our Boulton & Watt summer cocktail adventure on the DivaGals Facebook page.
STOW. Luxe Gal loves to travel in style, so when she discovered the AWOL travel bag by Duluth Trading Company, she was in heaven. It’s shaped like a classic medicine bag from the Old West and gives a loving homage to the men we grew up loving like our dads and Harrison Ford. The AWOL is ruggedly handsome, reliable and a great traveling companion, just like them!
SPECTATE. Here’s one night where it’s OK to stare at people in their underwear. The Freshpair Underwear Run, a 1.7-mile fun run, takes place tonight, July 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Central Park, to kick off the official Aquaphor New York City Triathlon, which takes place July 14. There’s no expensive race gear; instead, 500 strangers will run the race in their unmentionables! This year’s theme is “evolution,” so participants will wear underwear honoring the past and inspired for the future. Our own fitness correspondent Sakeena Nicole will be one of the masses ΓÇô we can’t wait to see what she slips into (out of?) to make her way down the trail! Race registration is officially closed, but you can still catch the action as a spectator. The race starts on the 72nd Street Transverse at Cherry Hill, just west of Bethesda Fountain.
ATTEND. Only have one night to experience The Hamptons? Then get yourself to the second annual St. Barth Hamptons, an unforgettable night presented by Social Life Magazine and St. Barth Tourism, and hosted by Molly Simms. You’ll spend the evening in a billowing white tent under the stars in Bridgehampton, but feel like you traveled all the way to St. Barth! A VIP ticket gets you open bar, light bites, a fashion show and dancing with DJ Tyger Lilly. Limited tickets are available.
SEE 2. If moving drama is your thing, tune in for the trear-jerking performances in Fruitvale Station, inspired by the true story of Oscar Grant III, a young black man who was unarmed when he was shot in the back and killed by a transit cop officer in Oakland, Calif., on New Year’s Day 2009. Michael B. Jordan (The Wire) and Oscar winner Octavia Spencer star.
