GAL APPROVED! Our Movie Of The Week Is The Photograph! Plus: Perpetua Skincare From Mexican Dynasties!By Maureen Martin, Samantha Bessudo Drucker | February 14, 2020 | Gal Approved
Ah, The Photograph! It’s a romance film of black love with soft filters, lush settings, and vintage music. It’s everything our thirsty hearts and eyes have been longing to see for decades: two attractive successful black people navigating romance with baggage and dysfunctional familial relationships. Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield radiate yuppy love with subtly. Writer-director Stella Meghie takes us through romances in two different decades displaying the damage we cause one another when we hold back.
The story centers around a photograph and the veteran reporter Michael (Stanfield) who finds himself in the archives of the museum where Mae (Rae) works as a curator. Michael is hooked, while Mae exercises caution, processing the recent loss of her mother and their estranged relationship. Mae unravels the past and discovers the sacrifices her mom Christina (Chanté Adams) made to build a life for herself and her daughter. Chanté is utterly delightful to watch in a star-making performance that is restrained but raw in vulnerability. The cinematography of the film captures the beauty and golden tones of brown skin that will take your breath away. See this film and take the journey. We know you will enjoy it. The Photograph, now playing.
