See Auli’i Cravalho in Cabaret
Cabaret is not an easy musical to sit through. Set in the seedy Kit Kat club in Berlin, it chronicles the rise of the Nazis in Germany in the early 1930s. It explores heavy themes of sexuality, gender and racial equality and the fears of political domination. But it has two of the most powerful roles to play on Broadway, one being English cabaret singer Sally Bowles. Auli’i Cravalho, best known for her work as Disney’s Moana, has stepped into the role and is mesmerizing.
It takes some big pipes to take on a role iconized by Liza Minelli in Cabaret’s musical movie. Cravalho rips apart the stage with her vocals, proving just how far she’ll go to embody this tortured performer who lives for the stage. Watching her performance, I was struck by how this fellow tiny being takes up so much space alongside her co-stars. At just 23 years old, she lives in Sally’s emotions and finds a connection to her character, who deals with homelessness and body autonomy. (Minelli was 27 when she won the Academy Award for Best Actress as Sally Bowles in the 1972 film).
Adam Lambert has also joined the production, and he was born to play the Emcee. He’s sassy, salty and sexy all at once. He also delivers incredible vocals that help make the first act—nearly two hours long—fly by.
The theater has been transformed into a dinner club, similar to what the patrons would have experienced inside the Kit Kat walls. Table seating got me and my guest close to the stage, and getting pulled up to perform with the hard-dancing ensemble at the start of Act II was exhilarating.
Before the start of every performance, audiences are invited to explore the Kit Kat Club and discover the Prologue, which takes place throughout the building and features a company of nine dancers and musicians. Yes, the whole experience is beautiful.
Cabaret is playing at the August Wilson Theatre in New York City.
Sleep on Greenleaf Linens

After a beautiful night at the theater, I want a good night’s rest. Greenleaf Organic Bamboo Linens, made from 100 percent organic viscose from bamboo, is just the right amount of silkiness to feel like you are slipping into your own cocoon. I love that they do triple duty: they help prevent fine lines and wrinkles in your skin, protect your hair from moisture loss and keep you cool throughout the night. The 400-thread count set has an oversized flat sheet, an 18″ deep fitted sheet, two deep envelope pillowcases and a matching sleep mask. They are also hypoallergenic, plastic-free and responsibly sourced. I woke up feeling so well-rested. My only gripe? I didn’t want to get out of bed!
