WATCH. Do you know the story behind Madame C.J. Walker, one of the first female millionaires in America? Now you can learn all about her in a new four-part series on Netflix. Self-Made chronicles her life from a poor washerwoman to the richest in the country, thanks to her line of hair care products that still exist today! Starring award-winner Octavia Spencer as Sarah Breedlove, who became Madame Walker, Self-Made centers around the rivalry Walker had with Annie Minerva Turnbo, another beauty care empress who Walker once worked for. Self-Made is presented like a slick soap opera, so there’s plenty of romance, backstabbing and dramah!
It’s good to note that the entire creative team behind Self-Made are African-American women, which includes executive production team Janine Sherman Barrois, Elle Johnson, Nicole Asher Jefferson and Kasi Lemmons, along with A’Lelia Bundles who is the great great granddaughter of Madam C.J. Walker and has written several books about her famous relative. At a VIP screening of Self-Made, A’Leilia shared, “It’s really great that so many more people are going to know about Madame C.J. Walker.” Self-Made, now playing on Netflix.
