GAL APPROVED! That Pet Life. Plus: Jungalow Emergency Kit. Beemster Cheese & Volcanic Region Wines.By Maureen Martin and Delaina Dixon | June 7, 2019 | Gal Approved
WATCH. The Secret Life Of Pets 2 is here! Max is back and happily cohabitating with Duke and his owner — that is until she gets married and has a baby! Now Max has a little human to protect, and his neurosis gets the best of him. Max gets much-needed countryside therapy from a gruff and tough farm dog named Rooster, who teaches him that you can’t live life when you are always scared. Back at Max’s NYC apartment building, Gidget must tap into her cat-like ways to retrieve Max’s favorite toy. And we meet two new characters, Snowball and Daisy, played by Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish respectively, who go on their own adventure to save a circus tiger (he’s just a big ole kitty!). Much like the first one, Pets 2 has sharp wit, brilliant animation that looks lifelike and a fast-paced story. And like the first, it has some dark, scary moments that may not be suitable for the youngest of children. But all in all, this pet life is all in good fun!

EAT & DRINK. Entertain yourself and maybe a few friends with wines from volcanic regions and cheese from Holland. Volcanic soils lead to wines that have higher mineral content and may have healing and restorative properties. Here are a few that we tried from France, Spain, and Chile. A 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon aged 13 months in oak barrels combined with the volcanic minerals to produce a woodsy oaky richness. Younger volcanic wines are a little more fruity. Spain’s last active volcano was 2000 years ago. The minerals in the soil have settled and the wine is balanced. The reserve is creamy and rich. In the French Cote d’Auvergne, the minerals inside offer a depth to the lightness of this fruity white wine. Casillero del Diablo, from Chile, always a personal favorite has a new way to experience its award-winning wines through its augmented reality app Drink AR. Download the app then Scan the label of any Casillero del Diablo Reserva wine to enter a virtual world depicting the vineyard’s 140-year-old cellar—rumored to be haunted by the devil himself.
If there is wine then there must be cheese! Enjoy so cheese brought to you by very well treated cows in Holland! Beemster cheeses, all made exclusively with milk from Beemster cows and goats. The cheeses range from firm and buttery to hard and butterscotch-y. We love the handy Boska cheese melter that will make summer grilling a little less sticky.
