GAL APPROVED! The Banker Is Open! Nia Long Talks About The New Real-Life Inspired FilmBy Delaina Dixon | March 6, 2020 | Gal Approved
SEE. The Banker tells the story of two African-American entrepreneurs who hire a white man to pose as the head of their real estate company as they buy buildings across Los Angeles. But this is not just a movie plot — it really happened in the 1960s.
Anthony Mackie and Samuel Jackson star as real-life bankers Bernard Garrett (Mackie) and Joe Morris (Jackson), who trained a caucasian pal to be the face of their business. It almost feels like a high-tech heist, until you realize they had to do it just so they could make the purchases in prejudiced times.
Nia Long also stars in the film as Eunice, Bernard’s first wife. At a VIP screening, she shared what it was like to portray his devoted partner. “Playing the role of Eunice was such a highlight in my career. She was such a lady, from the undergarments and the shoes to the wigs,” Nia shared. “I was driving people crazy saying that we needed to change her hair every time the year changes. That’s what women did, They had a wig for Sunday, they had a wig for church, one for work. We needed to be what we needed to be to get the work done.”
Nia also shared that the role reminded her to be soft. “Black women get a bad rap of being difficult and bossy. They call us loud and too much, but we’ve had to be too much. Now I think we can refine that. We can go back to being soft and forgiving and understanding. This woman was this man’s backbone. That’s the most powerful place to be… in the cut.”
The Banker, from Apple TV, is playing in theaters. It premieres on Apple TV on March 20.
