DivaGals contributor Shara Taylor shares her thoughts on the new comedic-drama.
Prime Video’s new dramedy The Burial centers around a Mississippi funeral home owner who brings a lawsuit against the owner of a multi-industry company that’s gobbling up the smaller businesses and misleading people unjustly. And yes, it’s based on a true story!
The Burial title made me wonder whether the movie would be suspenseful or scary. When I learned it was about a trial, I wondered if the lead actors would showcase their seriousness and lawyering skills as seen in the films Law Abiding Citizen and The Client. And boy, did they serve.
Stars Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones are excellently paired in the new dramedy. Both Oscar winners are funny and believable, delivering spot-on performances about a serious story with comedic moments. They are perfectly accompanied by supporting actors Jurnee Smollett, Mamoudou Athie and Alan Ruck. I didn’t even recognize Ferris Bueller’s Day Off actor Ruck, who plays a Southern attorney.
The movie is also a fun flashback nostalgic of the 90s, with music by Tony! Toni! Toné!, Salt-N-Pepa and Guy. Additionally, there’s dialogue referencing other happenings of the times, like the O.J. Simpson trial.
The language in The Burial may not be appropriate for the whole family. Still, the topic stirs discussion of historical significance and life lessons of integrity, kindness, fairness…and the golden rule.
The Burial is in theaters and coming to Prime Video on October 13.
