Ready to learn about Black history you may have never known about? Here are two documentaries to watch this weekend and one to put on your upcoming calendar.

761 Tank Batallion: The Original Black Panthers (History Channel)

Executive Produced and hosted by Morgan Freeman, this riveting documentary unveils the heroic efforts of the young Black men who served their country courageously and dutifully in World War II, only to return home to be treated as second-class citizens. Freeman and those dedicated to their cause help get these soldiers the recognition they deserve.

Time of Essence (OWN Network)

Oprah Winfrey Network and Essence Studios partnered for this intriguing retrospect of Essence magazine as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. Learn about its dramatic beginnings as the brainchild of four Black male entrepreneurs; the fight for editorial power in its early years; and the stars who have been honored to be featured in its pages and on its covers.

The Space Race (Nat Geo)

Set to air in 2024, The Space Race chronicles Black men and women who have been a part of the NASA program: the challenges they faced and the milestones they achieved along the way. Lisa Cortés and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza direct and produce. Learning about people who have defied prejudices to experience what’s out in the universe will leave you soaring.
