GAL APPROVED! Wonka Is A Tasty Treat—Our Divalicious Review!By Delaina Dixon | December 15, 2023 | Entertainment, Gal Approved
How did Willy Wonka become the king of chocolate? Everyone has an origin story, and Wonka shares that of a bright-eyed young dreamer who wants to bring the world his magical and mystical chocolate creations, a skill he learned from his loving, now-deceased mom.
Due to a lack of one essential skill, Wonka finds himself trapped in working off a seemingly endless debt that will never allow him to pursue his dreams. But thanks to his creative mind, and with the help of a plucky young girl named Noodle (Calah Lane), Wonka brings his chocolate to the masses. Of course, not all are impressed. Some very naughty chocolatiers and a crooked cop (played by Keegan-Michael Key) take drastic measures to try and keep Wonka and his chocolate dreams from ever getting off the ground.
Timothée Chalamet effortlessly takes on the role, paying homage to the OG Wonka, Gene Wilder, while also making it very much his own. Watching Hugh Grant play an oompa loompa is priceless. This is a cute, easy-to-digest film. It’s filled with color and simply crafted songs that don’t call for much singing prowess. The movie only has a few serious moments that could upset younger children.
Our Divalicious takeaway? We all need to, from time to time, live in a world of pure imagination. Here’s how you can do it in about two hours.
