Gotham’s J.W. Cortes Gives Back To Our Nation’s Vets. Plus: His Chic Style Secret)By Delaina Dixon | June 30, 2016 | Food Fashion Style
Independence Day is just days away here in the United States. As we celebrate the birth of our nation, we have to remember and honor the people who risked their lives to keep it safe and free: our nation’s vets.
Gotham star J.W. Cortes has partnered with Veterans Call, the new, innovative fundraising app, to launch its #DoubleDonation initiative. The funds raise give back to veterans, active-duty military and their families. Activistic, the company that developed Veterans Call, will double every donation made through the app, up to $50,000m through July 4.
The DivaGals spoke with J.W. to find out his very personal connection to the cause.
Why did you want to get involved with this project?
The industry to give back to veterans is so saturated, it’s easy to feel a bit overwhelmed. What I really love about Veteran’s Call, it’s using this revolutionary technology using your cell phone bill to pick from one of our incredible ten listed vetted organizations. You don’t have to use your credit card. We’ve really simplified the process and made it easy to feel really good about giving back to one of charities.
Do you have a personal connection to veterans?
I’m a combat veteran marine myself. I served for nearly 13 years before I decided to “deploy” to Hollywood. I understand the plight of the veteran and the active service member, but also of the families that sometimes have to bear the duties for the rest of nation, whether that be they’ve lost a loved one or have a veteran waiting for a prosthetic leg or medical appointments, or learn a new way of life due to sustained injuries. I can speak intimately on this. I know many of these guys firsthand. When Veteran’s Call presented itself, I knew it was the right way to go.
Can you tell us about the Double Donation?
The app is a free download, and we have a new initiative, “Double Donation.” What that means is that we’re going to match — up to $50,000 — every dollar donation up through July 4. We chose July 4 because we’re celebrating Independence, and that Independence was fought and won for on the backs of our nation’s military. We want you to celebrate, download the app and make a quick donation to those who have fought for our freedom.
You are always so handsomely dressed. Do you have one great fashion tip?
One thing I did take away from the military is that every uniform that the Marine Corps wears is fitted to your specific body. I’ve taken that into account in this new thing that I’m doing as an actor. So have a great fitting suit. And I emphasize the word fitting.
