Our fearless celeb reporter Angela Yvonne interviews the newest pop star from the Middle East!
Who Is Jaafar? This Jordanian transport burst on the scene in 2015 with his hit song “Sixteen,” catapulting him on to the pop star radar. His soothing voice, reminiscent of Julio Iglesias and Ricky Martin, is surely to gain him legions of international fans for years to come.
The upcoming year is sure to be a great one for Jaafar with his highly anticipated album Folktales of Spring dropping. I talked with the Miami-based singer about influence, his celebrity crush, and what he would be if he was not a singer.
What international and/or American musicians influenced your music?
I grew up listening to Jordanian folk music and North African genre of Mid-Eastern music. I have been following one of my favorites, in particular a singer called Cheb Mami. He did a duet with Sting called “Desert Rose” which is still one of my favorite songs. I think Cheb is one of the greatest singers alive and through that duet, I discovered American rock music through Sting and his band The Police. I also love Tom Petty.
Your single “Sixteen” has a powerful message about a girl not making it past her 16th birthday because of war. Why did you feel that the story needed to be told?
It is so relevant right now. Jordan is a peaceful place but there is a lot of uncertainty there. There are many children who never get to see their next birthday or see good life opportunities.
Folktales of Spring, your debut album, will it be mostly similar content to “Sixteen,” or will it be a mixture of different types of music?
This Album has a lot of social commentary, but it also talks about my journey here to pursue music.
I love the title Folktales of Spring, What does it mean?
There is a thing called “Arab Spring” and I thought it was more of a winter because of the horrible things that was going on, it didnΓÇÖt feel like spring at all. I used a play on words because folktales are not true.
Here are five more things you should know about Jaafar!
1. He would love to do a duet with Sade or Sting
2. His favorite show is Survivor
3. “Hello” by Adele is his current favorite song on his playlist
4. His Celebrity Crush is Minka Kelly
5. If he wasnΓÇÖt a singer, he would be an equestrian!
