Tell us about Jeannie’s personal style.
The one thing I know about my style, whether you google me or look through my past pictures, is that I always want to have fun, that’s something my mom taught me at a young age. I would walk into my kindergarten classes wearing different pastel colors and sewing two different things together and pieces falling all apart because I tried to sew my own shirts. Still today I enjoy having fun and embracing my femininity. My jobs have changed so much, and my body has changed a lot; I shape my style on what’s going on in my life. Right now I’m feeling pretty ferocious!!
How about your TV wardrobe?
Steampunk’d allows me to celebrate that edge and that power that I have in my life. Steampunk’d is a style that every woman and man should try because there’s an edge of sexy and grit unlike anything else. It’s not rock, it’s not bohemian, it’s not classic, it’s just steampunk’d! You just feel this light when you put on anything that you make and you age to give it that beautiful victorian sci-fi touch. It’s cool as hell.
Let’s talk your fashion inspiration!
My mom, Mama Mai. She taught me that you don’t have to have a lot of money, you don’t have to speak the language, you just have to teach people to respect you through the way that you look, and that’s everything to me. I don’t wait to see what I have on the schedule for the day; I don’t wait to see how much money I have in my account or who I’m dating to wake up and find out that I have so much to accomplish. I put on an outfit and it tells me that — my mom taught me all that.
And your fashion idol?
My mom and Iris Apfel. She’s a 93-year-old model and fashion icon that’s got it going on! She has absolutely taught the world that it takes just for you to have a little bit of fun and have the best imagination in the world to feel great.
Let’s talk fashion trends.
I loved seeing┬á steampunk’d in NY Fashion Week. I saw Alexander Wang, Jimmy Choo and Givenchy. All the shows are coming out with amazing buttoned up Victorian blouses to really cool edgy crop tops that have prominent shoulders and corseted dresses, it’s crazy! It’s a perfect time to be Steampunk’d because the style is going around.
What’s your favorite fashion trend?
Steampunk’d, hands-down. If you notice what I wore to the recent VMAs red carpet, I definitely pulled some of that “Steampunk’d” to life into bright peacock two-piece dress. I gave myself a metal “corseting,” a rustic copper belt and┬á accented jewelry. It just had a really cool Victorian feel. Recently I went on a press tour with the girls from The Real all with my Steampunk’d look.
And what about shoes?
I love Melissa shoes! They are so comfortable. I dream of Melissa shoes!
Do you have any future fashion plans?
I will be coming out with a traditional Vietnamese womenswear line. What I love about it is that it’s sexy and it’s got a very feminine look to it.┬áI’m planning to create different versions of it.
