John Boyega was in the room for the NY premiere of Number One On the Call Sheet, where he caught up with the DivaGals. The upcoming documentary features Black actors discussing the significance and importance of being in the top slot in Hollywood projects.
The Star Wars actor recalled for us the emotional moment he received his first number one call sheet for the 2011 film Attack the Block. Boyega, who at the time was credited as John Adebayo Bogo, portrayed the character Moses in the cult-classic film.
“I remember calling my dad,” he revealed. “He had the water in the left eye, and he didn’t let it come out, but he was holding it—you know, when they’re holding it in the left eye.”
He explained to his father, a preacher, that being number one on the call sheet in the film industry signifies personal success and the ability to create opportunities for others.
His father’s response? “That’s Christlike.”
Now, Boyega is focused on expanding his influence beyond acting. He’s ready to produce and direct films that tell authentic Black stories. “I mean, we’re developing right now,” he stated, highlighting his commitment to creating meaningful content.
Working with Lakeith Stanfield and Will Smith‘s Overbrook Entertainment, Boyega expressed his desire to extend an “olive branch” to emerging Black filmmakers.
“We can bring our names, and that can add value to a project and make it real,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts within the industry.
What kind of stories is he looking to tell? Historical dramas, romantic comedies and stories that showcase the full spectrum of the Black experience. “Happy and wealth stories, it’s growing a different type of intelligence on Black people and things that we don’t really know about,” he revealed, ready to give us those nuanced, complex, and joyful stories.
Boyega is proving that he’s not just a star; he’s a force to be reckoned with. He’s creating opportunities, championing diverse narratives, and reminding us all that true power comes from lifting others. We’re watching and cheering him on every step of the way!
