Kym Whitley On New Audible Original Podcast Dramatizing Her Biggest Role: Motherhood

Remember the hit OWN series Raising Whitley, where comedian Kym Whitley shared her new life with her baby son Joshua? Whitley’s been keeping tabs on Joshua’s antics for the past decade. Now she’s sharing a heightened version of her life with son in the new Audible Original podcast, Kym. “I like to call this Audible Original a sitcom for your ears because you really get to tap into different parts of your brain than you would do visually,” she tells the DivaGals. “You get to sit back and imagine the world around you and imagine how these people look.” The series is produced by Lena Waithe.
For those not in the know, Whitley was contemplating adoption when she got a call from a hospital nearly 11 years ago, telling her she had been chosen to be the guardian of a newborn baby. And she had just an hour to make up her mind. “God said you’ve been asking. Here’s your kid,” she declares.
As Joshua approaches his teen years, he’s done some pretty funny things, which are played out in the form of Kym’s fictional son, Trevante. Whitley also reveals that she’s learned just how much these little beings we’re surrounded by can soak up. “If I’m not trying and learning new things, he’s not going to learn things,” she declares. “So that they can be better for the world, it makes me check myself.” Whitley has also made it a priority to have strong Black male role models in her son’s life, including her brother and actor Andre LaVelle.
But one thing hasn’t changed for the comedian. “I am still a WW ambassador, for WeightWatchers, so I watch my intake, but I have found a great cocktail that is low in calories,” she shares. “And it’s really just vodka, soda water and a squeeze of lime. It’s so refreshing. Every now and then, I will go out and outside to unwind, especially when I’m with my girls. We love a good cocktail.”
