The pandemic isn’t stopping TV Press Tour from happening! Tune in regularly to find out what all the networks are offering up this season!

Danielle Brooks is Mahalia Jackson on Lifetime! Helmed by executive producers Robin Roberts and Linda Berman and directed by Kenny Leon, it tells the story of the famed American gospel singer, widely considered one of the most influential vocalists of the 20th century and credited for bringing the gospel blues across the country. Danielle truly was born to play the role and a few famous friends told her that. She was working with Jennifer Hudson on The Color Purple on Broadway who told her “you should play Mahalia.” At the time, Danielle didn’t know how she’d get the opportunity, but much like Mahalia, she tapped into her faith. “Mahalia stood firm on her faith with God. She grew up in the church, she leaned on God when she couldn’t do things,” Danielle shared during the movie’s panel. “I didn’t know how or where the story was gonna get to, but I had to trust what was given to me in my spirit, I had to trust that.” Danielle shared that by the grace of God, Kenny and Robin reached out, and they wanted her to be a part of this production.

Of course, Mahalia faced racism in her time, something Kenny took into consideration while shooting certain scenes. “I’m in the space of listening to women and to listening to women of color,” Kenny shared with DivaGalsDaily.com. And what he’s learned is that the world would be a better place if everyone did as well. “I think what’s my reward, with a women’s voice with a sensibility and nurturing of women,” we can help eradicate racism. “I see it very clearly, and I’m honored to continue to fight.”

Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia Jackson airs April 3 on Lifetime.

Lifetime is also set to air T.D. Jakes‘ “Seven Deadly Sins” produced anthology from acclaimed author Victoria Christopher Murray this April. The first two movies, Lust and Envy, star singer/actresses Serayah McNeill and Keri Hilson, respectively.
