Why You’ll Love (And Maybe Loathe) Greenleaf, On OWN Network Tonight!

Luxury Gal gives her thoughts of OWN’s newest series Greenleaf.
Okay so I am torn on this one … If you have any history with a black church you are going to be able to look at the characters in OWN’s newest series Greenleaf, premiering tonight and go “Yaasss, that’s Miss Thang and Minister So-and-So.”
The show centers around the Greenleaf family, who run a megachurch in Memphis, Tenn. A family member has perished at her own hands, so a daughter who left her daddy’s holy empire decades ago returns and is once again confronted by all the dirty secrets hidden in church’s musty closets. The acting is good; the writing is on fleek and the churchy clich├⌐s are going to make Black Twitter go wild.

Here are the Pros. The all star cast; the murder mystery relayed in episode one and the nuanced writing. The hot gospel performance of the youngest Greenleaf daughter, played by Deborah Joy Winans, is desperately trying to find her voice in this family of fire-breathing preachers. Little sis should forget trying to preach and focus on a gospel music career. Thank you Oprah for giving some of our favorite actors some juicy roles!
Here are the Cons. If you are a church goer there is a lot going on here that is going to rattle your righteousness. It’s the sensual love/sex scenes and — dare I say it — wine on the pastor’s dinner table. The rampant sin that plagues this church family are more than evident.
But if you put the kids to bed and want a little something spiritual that’s flavored with a dynasty’s fabulousness, hold on to your bible watch the show. You can ask the lawd for some forgiveness for this guilty pleasure when it’s picked up for season two.
Greenleaf, series premiere, airs Tuesday, June 21 at 9 p.m. on OWN. Watch the trailer on our DivaGals TV!
