What gets adrenaline pumping more than an epic clash between two towering titans? Not much, if you ask fans eagerly waiting for the second season finale of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters to drop on May 1 on Apple TV.
In a sneak peak that already has audiences talking, the menacing guardian of Skull Island, Kong, faces off against the equally threatening Titan X, the new beast that was unleashed onto the world earlier in the season.
Of course, those are the kind of action scenes that keep viewers coming back to Monarch, a show rife with jumbo-sized action. Its roster of beasts keeps getting better. So far, we’ve seen classic titans like Godzilla and Kong and other original beasts like Leafwings and the terrifying Titan X, who’s out to protect her eggs. It looks like the VFX team was still put to good use this season.
“More is more,” producer Tory Tunnell raved to Polygon about the roster of kaijus we saw this season. “There’s so much there, and so much to mine.”
While the monsters definitely get plenty to do and hype from die-hard Monsterverse fans, the human Monarch actors have been busy building up the lore of Skull Island and the threat that humans sometimes pose to the imposing titans. They’ve had their fair share of gasp-worthy moments, from Cate (Anna Sawai) taking that bold step to save Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) and dealing with the lasting consequences to more exploration into the rift that is the Axis Mundi.

The balancing act between intrigue and action is part of a bigger plan for showrunners to surprise fans and continue adding twists to the Monsterverse story that was laid out in season one.
The cast sat down earlier this year to talk about how filming this season of the Apple TV series felt bigger and brought more depth to their characters.
“In season one [Cate] was always running away, and in season two we see her find purpose and meaning and why she needs to make this choice, and that motivates her to actually start following this family legacy instead of running away from it,” Sawai said of her character in an interview.
“It’s bigger, it’s badder, it’s got a lot more to it in terms of the relationships of all the family members, and it’s very emotional in that regard,” Russell added.
And it all comes to a head on Skull Island on the season finale.
