Yes, I’m a thrifter and proud of it! As we move into another year of eco-consciousness and sustainability, one of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint is to embrace preloved clothing.

Now, I know what some are thinking: Can I be Divalicious with preloved looks? Of course, you can! Second-hand shopping is a fantastic way to find unique and affordable items while promoting sustainable consumer practices.

These are some of my favorite looks that I put together with thrifted pieces. Mix them with your investment pieces to create your most fabulous looks.

Here are some of my (and a few other savvy second-hand loving DivaGals) top preloved clothing shopping tips to inspire you to thrift in 2024!

Make a List

Walking into a thrift store can feel overwhelming. It does involve digging through racks and shelves to find hidden treasures. If you are prepared with some specific inspiration pieces you are looking for, you’ll have a game plan and not waste time figuring out what you want. Put those Pinterest pins to work!

Shop for Trends

There are new fashion trends every season, which could get pricey! Second-hand shopping is the perfect place to find versions of the trends (after all, fashion is cyclic!) and give them a try at a fraction of the price.

Explore All Sections

Explore all areas of the store, including men’s, women’s and children’s sections, as well as accessories and home goods. You never know where you might find a hidden gem.

Inspect the Condition

You may find a gem, but if it’s in horrible condition, it’s not worth your time (unless you upcycle, which I love to do!). Thoroughly inspect the quality and condition of each item. Check for stains, tears, missing buttons or major signs of wear.

Snag that Quality

When thrifting, look for high-quality fabrics and well-made items. While vintage shopping at thrift stores is becoming more of a quaint notion as more fast fashion makes its way to the thrift shops, finding vintage pieces with good craftsmanship ensures they will last longer in your wardrobe.

Be an Early Bird

Get to the shops early. Put everything you like in a cart. Before you get to the register, closely examine each item for damage. Be highly selective and consider how much wear you will get from an item before you purchase.

Or…

Stay Home and Shop

Who says you have to leave home to thrift? There are amazing online sites like ThredUp, Poshmark and TheRealReal where you can score preloved items while sipping Black Girl Magic Bubbly Reisling. You can get really specific with what you are trying to score with their online search boxes.

DIY and Upcycling

If you’re like TV DivaGal, you can get creative with DIY projects to personalize and update thrifted items. Try Upcycling items that may have great fabric but an outdated style, like a skirt into a pair of shorts or a large shirt into a crop top. One of our favorite YouTube DIYers out there is Angelina of @Blueprint DIY, who shows you how to turn just about anything into a fabulous, red carpet-worthy piece, with scissors-only tutorials to full-out sewing projects.

Happy thrifting, Divas!
