Meet The Woman Behind Phi Hair LLC: A High-Quality Extension Brand We Can All Afford

For Shamille Powell — who goes by Shay — good hair didn’t start as a trend or flex, it was about function. A healthcare professional who works as an anesthesia tech in a Level One trauma center, Shay spends her days in scrubs, under caps, and in high-pressure environments; the last thing she wants to worry about is shedding, tangling, or hair that won’t blend.

“I wanted to come up with something that would be both functional and good hair, and that would blend seamlessly,” she says. “So I created Phi Hair, LLC.”

Good Hair, Good Price

Phi Hair LLC is Powell’s answer to a problem many women know well: inconsistent quality, inflated prices, and hair that looks good out of the package but doesn’t last. Her solution was to build a premium hair brand rooted in raw human hair, sourced carefully and priced for working women.

“My hair is affordable because I’m a working-class lady,” she explains. “So I wanted to create a hair brand that was top tier, but at prices that we could also afford.”

The brand specializes in raw human hair—hair that comes from a single donor rather than mixed batches. “It’s real human hair, which means it has one donor,” she says. “So it comes off one little Indian lady’s head.” That single-donor sourcing helps eliminate shedding, tangling, and quality inconsistencies.

A Personal Professional Journey

Her path into the business wasn’t planned—it was personal.

While attending Alabama State University, Shay relied on a neighbor to do her hair. After graduating, she found herself driving two hours, twice a month, just to keep her hair consistent. When her stylist announced she was moving, she panicked—until an unexpected solution appeared.

“My hairstylist said, ‘Why don’t I just sell you my vendor? I thought about it, and well, that would make more sense. It would cut out the middleman.”

That vendor turned out to be the most reliable hair source Shay had ever used. “It was always consistently good hair, and it always lasted,” she says. After years of trying other vendors and dealing with hit-or-miss quality, she finally had hair she could trust.

Still, it took encouragement from coworkers to turn that access into a business.

One day at work, while changing out of her scrubs, a colleague asked where she got her hair. Shay shared her story—and soon made her first sale.

“She told me, ‘I really was just buying the hair because I wanted to support you because you were my friend,’” Shay remembers. “But then she said, ‘I didn’t know it was gonna be this good.’”

Word spread quickly. One coworker told another. Then another. “And it just kind of took off from there.”

Phi Hair Offerings

Today, Phi Hair offers Indian, Cambodian, and Peruvian hair, with Shay noting that Indian and Cambodian are her top sellers. The brand carries bundles, closures, frontals, tape-ins, clip-ins, i-tips, and fully customizable wigs ranging from 12 to 40 inches.

“Our wigs are custom to you,” she explains. Customers choose cap color, clip placement, and construction preferences. While the brand doesn’t sell pre-colored wigs, all hair can be dyed, toned, and processed. “Because again, it is human hair,” she says. “It takes color very well.”

Longevity is one of Shay’s biggest selling points. Holding up a wig during the interview, she makes a bold claim: “This hair is 5 years old. Five years. No shedding, no tangling, and still having a natural sheen to it.”

That durability comes with a lesson. “People put all that product in their wigs, and I’m like, ‘It doesn’t need all of that.’ This hair, it’s gonna lay down. Trust me.”

What to Wear in 2026

Looking ahead, Shay hopes clients embrace volume and texture. “I love big hair,” she says. “I know a lot of the girls like the really flat, straight, bust-down middle part, but we’re trying to get away from that.”

At its core, Fire Hair LLC is built for women who live real lives—women who want hair that lasts, looks natural, and doesn’t require constant replacement. Or, as Shay puts it simply: “As long as you wash it and keep it up like it’s yours, it will remain like this.”
