Pizza Movie Promises a Callback to an Era of Cult-Classic Comedies

Comedy genres come and go, but there’s something timeless about throwing on a stoner comedy on a Friday night to chill out with all your friends around. Hulu’s got us covered with our next weekend hangout flick when Pizza Movie starts streaming on April 3.
The movie is a callback to all those cult-classic stoner comedies that our parents secretly watched, like Half Baked or The Big Lebowski. It’s not as simple as the title would have you believe: after taking an experimental drug, two college students are thrown into a night of chaotic hallucinations and obstacles when they set out to grab some pizza.
The movie got a killer reception when it premiered at the SXSW festival in March, and it’s clear that the cast is stocked with fan-favorite actors and comedians. Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo takes the lead role (in a huge twist from his child-actor days), and Black-ish star Marcus Scribner, comedian Calen Hearon, and Prom Pact star Peyton Elizabeth Lee round out the hilarious ensemble cast.
But be warned: Matarazzo is letting fans of his Stranger Things role know that this role is a lot more grown-up than a younger audience is prepared to see. The young star joked with Cracked that parents are surely “going to like it less!” but that won’t deter a college-aged audience from watching the hysterics unfold.
Pizza Movie streams on Hulu April 3.
