Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW), observed April 11-17, is a nationwide initiative founded and led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance. It aims to raise awareness about this critical issue and advocate for change.

The facts are alarming. Black women in the United States are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. This disparity persists regardless of socioeconomic status, highlighting the deep-seated impact of systemic racism and healthcare inequities.

BMHW serves as a platform to amplify the voices of Black mothers, families and communities, centering their experiences and advocating for equitable care. Its missions are to:

  • Raise Awareness: Shed light on the alarming statistics and the systemic factors that contribute to Black maternal mortality rates.
  • Drive Policy Change: Advocate for policies that improve access to quality and culturally competent care for Black mothers.
  • Build Community: Foster connections and support networks for Black mothers and birthing people.
  • Offer Empowerment: Provide resources and information to help Black women make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

These initiatives aim to educate, empower, and mobilize individuals and organizations to address the Black maternal health crisis.

BMHW is more than just a week of awareness. It’s a reminder that Black mothers deserve the same level of care, respect and support as any other mom-to-be. It’s a demand for a healthcare system that values and protects Black lives.
