RESET YOUR LIFE 2020! The Comeback – Week 5: How To Work Out Even When You’re Not Home
By Samantha Bessudo Drucker | February 4, 2020 | FitnessIt’s been a little over a month since I started my comeback journey and things are happening.
I had the joy of getting away for a little family time and some R&R. A little getaway can be great for inspiration, your fitness plan and a recharge of the spirit. Technology has helped me change my body and take away my excuses. It also allows my trainers to help support me even when I’m away. Here’s how I keep my workouts going, even when I’m away.
FACETIME. My husband Jeffrey and I workout together with Boris Borbua, a longtime friend and trainer, four times a week. It used to be that I could only workout with Boris a few times a year while I was visiting family in Cartagena, Colombia, but now, thanks to FaceTime, Whatsapp and PayPal we can workout throughout the year and maintain consistency. That’s what is all about; ultimately we become what we spend our time doing.
Throughout my life, I’ve had coaches and trainers. I have been fortunate to have some great ones. That relationship is sacred. To a degree, you are trusting your body to that person. When they say jump, you do. Therefore, this highly personal relationship even in a professional context is a relationship where you, the trainee, have agreed to do as you are told and fight through the burn and the challenge of it all. It’s important that you have a good relationship with this person. They should feel like an ally. They should be professional, punctual and trustworthy and they should be in tune with your individual psychology in order to get the best out of you. If it doesn’t feel right, find another trainer. A great coach can make all the difference in the world.
CUSTOM VIDEOS. Can’t make it to your trainer? My trainer Zach Fazz in Hollywood made me a couple of custom videos for me to do as homework while I was away. We even face-timed so he could take me through the workouts he provided. I also touched base regularly via WhatsApp to report my workouts, physical activity, weight and diet. The daily check-ins were invaluable.
YOUTUBE. I love Blogilates, created by fitness expert Cassey Ho. I’m a fan! She has a very positive vibe and comes across totally unintimidating. She has tons of workout videos o YouTube, some as short as 5 minutes. I feel like I can handle almost anything for 5 minutes, and then 10, 15 or 20 come easily. It’s great if you don’t have a big block of time to work out all at once but you do have a few minutes here and there to get in some concentrated movement! The moves themselves don’t seem like anything much until you start to do them… challenging!
APPS. On CARROT, a round stick figure barks at you a series of calisthenics; timeless old fashioned exercises that get the job done!
Except for a small band that is easy to pack for some of my workouts with Zach, none of these workouts required equipment space or a lot of time. Making it easy to get in a workout no matter where in the world I am!
My results are pretty wonderful. I’ve lost 14 lbs! My diet is super clean. I have a little low sugar fruit in the morning or green juice. I avoid grains and beans. I consume mostly vegetables with a little fish. Sometimes if I’m not too hungry, I’ll skip a meal or even two depending on the day.
Cheating is a fact of life — in dieting! The trick is to cheat just a little to get the taste of something out of your system. I often say “I don’t want to EAT it, I just want to taste it.” Once you “cheat,” don’t worry about it! Just get right back on your program immediately. I have been getting compliments on my abs. My clothes are fitting better and I am starting to feel like myself again, which is great!
I still have a ways to go but I’m excited to see just how far I can go in my fitness journey and in my professional life.
