Riverdale’s Josie – Why She’s Digging Her Natural ‘Do (But Archie? Not So Much!)By Delaina Dixon | January 26, 2017 | Entertainment
Tonight, we know what youΓÇÖll be watching! Riverdale, The CWΓÇÖs dark, spooky and sexy vision of life with Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead, premieres tonight with fellow comic characters-come-to-life Josie and the Pussycats. And in this rendition, this rocking trio are all gals of color!
We spoke with Ashleigh Murray (pictured center) who plays the band’s lead gal Josie, to learn a little bit more about what makes this Josie sing.
YouΓÇÖre the first female of color to play Josie!
ItΓÇÖs really nice to have women of color in the forefront of what I hope to be a very successful television show ΓÇô to capitalize on an inclusion we donΓÇÖt have. And me, specifically being able to play Josie – not having to look like the original makeup in the comic book, is a huge accomplishment and a privilege too. I donΓÇÖt feel like I need to look like Josie to know who she is, and that’s for Valerie and Melody too. It translates no matter what we look like ΓǪ though itΓÇÖs nice to have a little pizzazz and style going on.
How are you making the character your own?
The character description said sheΓÇÖs sassy and snooty, so I said let me pick apart who she is. After reading the script, I said I got this down: ΓÇ£Lip gloss, always heels, never in sneakers.ΓÇ¥ SheΓÇÖs sassy enough to be entertaining and likeable, but she doesnΓÇÖt push her fans away. She understands that she needs her team with her. Her relationship with her Pussycats is very important to her.
So whatΓÇÖs her deal with Archie? They donΓÇÖt seem the best of pals.
HereΓÇÖs the deal with Archie. HeΓÇÖs a threat. Not only to her success but to her group. SheΓÇÖs so focused on success, she doesnΓÇÖt have time for guys, and this is the heartthrob everyone is fawning over! Even her pussycats are like, ΓÇ£Oh that redhead,ΓÇ¥ and sheΓÇÖs like ΓÇ£Stop, you need to stay away!ΓÇ¥ It comes off as this is my territory ΓÇô not only the music, but my girls, and you need to back back. He seems to think thereΓÇÖs going to be a situation [between himself and Josie]. I donΓÇÖt think so. HeΓÇÖs so thirsty, heΓÇÖs sucking face with everybody!
WeΓÇÖre loving your natural! What are some of your favorite products?
When my hair is not dyed, I love Jane Carter solution and Curl Junkies. But since IΓÇÖve had color in my hair, IΓÇÖm so in love with Camille Rose Naturals. ItΓÇÖs the only thing that keeps my hair really juicy and not dry. This is also very important to me, and I hold it near and dear to my heart, being able to play this role as a woman of color, and also being able to be natural. I want every little brown and black girl to accept that you have the versality to wear you hair how you want. DonΓÇÖt ever feel that it coming out naturally is a problem. You can love it, embrace it, wear it, rock it, you can definitely do it on national television if you want!
Riverdale premieres Thursday, Jan. 26 at 9 p.m. on The CW.
