TV contributor Angela Yvonne checks out the movie you should see this weekend!
Calling all DivaGals! Mo’Nique may not be Empire‘s Cookie, but she’s getting what’s hers on the big screen. Blackbird marks her executive producing debut!
The film is an adaptation of the amazing book by the same name. Written by Larry Duplechans and Patrik-Ian Polk, Blackbird is a coming of age story dealing with homosexuality in a small Southern Baptist town in Mississippi.
Monique stars as a grief stricken mother whose life has fallen apart since the abduction of her daughter, and her unwavering faith that prayer will bring her back. Newcomer Julian Walker plays Randy, the son who religious upbringing causes him to deny his homosexual urges until a chance meeting at an audition and renewed relationship with his father (Isaiah Washington) changes his life in more ways than he could imagine. This must see film also stars D. Woods, Gary L. Gray, Nikki Jane and Terrell Tilford.
I loved this movie, and I predict that this will put Monique and Isaiah back on the Hollywood radar. I am always down for a plot that gets people to think about ways to change.
Blackbird will be in five markets in selected theaters beginning April 24. DonΓÇÖt meet me there; beat me there!
