press_leftOne thing is going to go through your mind after you watch American Character Along Highway 50 tonight: What can I do to make a difference?

The documentary chronicles legendary news reporter Tom Brokaw‘s yearlong journey across the nation via Highway 50.

Along the way he meets real people and showcases their daily trials and triumphs, from unemployment and health care insurance issues to school and community reform.

“We report these stories and hope they land and people have a reaction,” Tom shared with the┬á TV DivaGal at a private screening for the telefilm. “Now a resourceful person can go out and find how to make that difference.”dsc05784

USA Network has made that even easier to do. By clicking here, you can find out more about the people featured in tonight’s program.

The documentary also shows how we are all connected as Americans, no matter what our background.

“Communities come together to solve difficult problems,” Tom shared. “They get up every morning in these communities to decide collectively how they should. That’s always been the story of this country, I think.”

To that end, USA Network also encourages viewers to take the Characters Unite pledge, as we work together to end racism, sexism and any other type of -isms that plague our nation.

What a beautiful thought as we celebrate Martin Luther King Day.

American Character Along Highway 50 airs Monday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. on USA Network.
