Sinners takes us on a vivid journey to 1930s Mississippi—a time alive with the rhythms of blues, jazz and the deep cultural history tied to the land. It is here that we meet Smoke and Stack, twin brothers whose return to their homeland dredges up not just memories but unresolved business and buried truths. Both roles are played by Michael B. Jordan, whose performance anchors this film.
The film does an excellent job of immersing viewers in this nostalgic yet turbulent era, but it’s Jordan’s portrayal of the twins that lies at its heart. Known for his transformative acting, Jordan dives deep into the complexities of twin telepathy and the unspoken bond between siblings. He spoke in his media interviews for Sinners about the extensive research he undertook to understand the unique relationship of twins, and it’s evident in his performance.
However, despite his dedication and preparation, something didn’t fully resonate. Jordan is usually a force on screen, bringing layers of depth and intensity to his characters. Yet here, his portrayal of Smoke and Stack felt somewhat underdeveloped, leaving a sense of incompletion. For a performer of Jordan’s caliber, I expected more depth, more layers. His talent is undeniable, but this role felt like it didn’t fully stretch his range. On a brighter note, newcomer Miles Caton, in his first acting role as Sammie, brings a refreshing energy to the film.
