Sports Gal gets the lowdown on the new professional hair care line from SoftSheen-Carson.

Since Sports Gal is also a DivaGal, hair care is an important part of my beauty routine.

That’s why I attended an information session on SoftSheen-Carson’s newest innovation, Optimum Advanced, a revolutionary relaxer hair care system for stylists. This is big news because it’s the company’s first professional launch in 10 years. The relaxer uses patented technology that actually makes hair stronger, rather than weakening it, during the relaxing process.

Now I know what you’re thinking; the idea of a relaxer that strengthens hair sounds a bit too good to be true. But in this case, it is because of Optimum’s three important ingredients: Smart Lye, Pro-Keratin and an oil infusion. This patented system affects how the relaxer is delivered into the hair follicle.

Here’s how it works: The oil infusion creates a protective cushion against the lye in the relaxer, while the Pro-Keratin conditions (and thereby strengthens) the hair during the process. And the fact that the relaxer is odorless is a huge bonus!

Seeing is believing, and the two gorgeous models whose hair had been processed with this relaxer and styled were a definite testament. Both women had beautiful, shiny, healthy hair that was light to the touch (trust me, we felt it!). One model had had the relaxer in for a few weeks and had only used the shampoo and conditioner for the presentation, and her hair had that freshly relaxed look to it.

SoftSheen-Carson┬á styling expert Johnny Wright, who has styled First Lady Michelle Obama, and director of education Shannon King gave some great advice for gals who want to maintain a busy life and still have great hair (yes, Fitness Gal, I’m talking to you!). After exercising, Johnny says the key is condition. You can even put a little conditioner on the hair before bed to give it that extra bit of TLC.

For gals who have been wearing extensions or weaves and want to relax their own hair, Shannon suggests leaving your own hair out of the extensions for at least three weeks before taking on any process, and adding a deep conditioning routine the hair twice a week to prep for the relaxer. Both Johnny and Shannon say it’s best to wait two weeks before or after relaxing to add color to the hair. And FYI: the relaxing system can be used on any hair that needs to tame the wave. It’s all about controlling your texture, no matter what color you are in the rainbow!

The new Optimum Advanced relaxing hair care system will be available in the marketplace around April or May. As it is only available to professionals, you will have to go to your stylist to use it, though we did the scoop that the company plans to create a consumer companion line for at-home maintenance.

I encourage you to try it out and let us know your results. And if you love it as much as we DivaGals do, let us know below!
